St. Mark’s, the heart of Venice
The District of St. Mark’s is the heart of Venice and St. Mark’s square is its pulsing centre. This piazza has always been at the centre of Venetian life, with its celebrated cafés and atmosphere enlivened by music and many have called it ‘the most beautiful salon in the world’. It is made up of an artistic complex of buildings, which, although stylistically different, are part of the same urban theme. An important part of St. Mark’s is a visit to the…
DucalPalace
The monumental entrance to the Palace is Porta della Carta, a splendid example of rich Gothic style that gives onto an inner courtyard, in the middle of which are two bronze well curbs. The courtyard is surrounded by porticoes with an upper loggia. On the Eastern side of the building is the Scala dei Giganti (Giants’ Staircase), so-called because of the two enormous statues by Sansovino, on each side. The staircase reaches the loggia, but to visit the upper floors there is another ornate staircase, magnificently decorated with frescoes and gilded stucco: the Scala d’Oro (Golden Staircase). The DucalPalace was the political headquarters of the Republic, the residence of the Doge and seat of the main State magistrature. It is still the highest expression of Venetian art. As one moves through the rooms, between paintings and sculpture, the whole compendium of the history and glory of the Republic of Venice passes before one’s eyes.
St. Mark’s Square
The square has a trapezoidal form and is enclosed on its two longer sides by the sequence of the Procuratie.
These are constructions defined as new and old, due to the chronology of the construction of buildings on the arches of the ground floor portico.
St. Mark’s Basilica
This rises next to the DucalPalace and is an incomparable architectural jewel in Venetian Byzantine Style.
It was the Palace Chapel, but also the tomb of the patron saint, events from whose life are told in the decorative wall mosaics.
