Burano

This island of fishermen is also dominated by a large church and by the leaning mass of its bell tower. It is an area of embroiderers – this estuary island is one of the places where the ancient art of lace-making is still practised, a highly technical skill in which Venetian craftswomen have reached incomparable heights.

An interesting characteristic of the architecture of the houses (which are typically Venetian) is the exact delimitation of the property from top to bottom using bright colours that are always different. This feature has made the island the residence of artists and painters, who have re-discovered an almost forgotten way of life (motor boat line 12 from Treporti).

St Lazzaro degli Armeni is an extremely rich cultural centre that has an ancient printing press, a wealth of art and an incomparable Egyptian Museum (motor boat line 20 from St. Mark’s 8.15-10.30-12.05-14.55-18.45-21.30-22.10-from S.Lazzaro 10.45-12.20-15.20-17.10-19.00-21.45.

St Francesco del Deserto: home of an ancient monastery whose church and cloister can still be visited. The island can be reached from Burano by private boat. Lido: (20 minutes with the line 14 motor boat from Punta Sabbioni) from April to October, there is a municipal Casino that also has artistic and theatrical events. In the Palazzo del Cinema every year in September, there is an International Exhibition of Cinematographic Art and Song. An interesting feature is the line of Art Déco villas dating back to the early 1900s, when the Lido was a holiday destination for only the very important. You can take a trip there by bike, leaving by motor boat from Punta Sabbioni (3 km from our hotel). If you want, you can also go by bike to the island of Pellestrina and then to Chioggia. This trip can be done in a day, stopping for lunch in Chioggia and you don’t need to be a particularly good cyclist. There is also an excellent golf course at the Lido (information and course bookings at reception).

CHIOGGIA: is at the furthest margin of the lagoon. The port faces the last mouth to the sea. Chioggia has an enormous Cathedral and all its other churches and palaces are clearly in Venetian style, yet it is extremely different from Venice. It has always been linked to the Serenissima, and its same architects and painters worked in Venice, but its world has no aristocratic connections, it lives essentially by fishing and it is one of the most important fishing ports in Italy.
